Introduction

The Northwest Territories (NWT) makes up a large part of Canada’s North. There is a lot of space to live, explore and play within its 1.3 million square kilometers. There are 33 communities in the NWT with a total population of 44,718 with about 18,884 living in the capital city, Yellowknife.

To immigrate here through the Northwest Territories Nominee Program, you need to either be ready to open, purchase or invest in a business in the NWT or have a job offer from an employer in the NWT.

NTNP consists of the following steams:

Employer Driven Stream includes:


Entry Level/Semi-Skilled Occupations Category

Requirements:

  1. Submit an application in a NOC C or D occupation
  2. Have a valid work permit and must have already worked in the position in the Northwest Territories for a minimum of six months; Occupation NOC C or D
  3. Have a minimum level of CLB 4 in either official language
  4. Have expressed interest in immigrating to the Northwest Territories
  5. Have legal status to work and hold a valid work permit, if currently residing in Canada
  6. Have the required certification or accreditation for the occupation and meet the licensing requirement if applicable
  7. Have the formal education and/or specialized training required for the specific position
  8. Have the work experience required by the employer
  9. Be able to sufficiently communicate in English and/or French
  10. Have sufficient settlement funds according to number of dependents


Skilled Worker Category

Requirements:

  1. A Job offer in a NOC Skill Level 0, A, or B occupation
  2. Have a minimum level of CLB 5 in either official language in NOC B jobs, CLB 6 in NOC 0, A jobs
  3. Can fulfill the duties of the occupation
  4. Have expressed interest in immigrating to the Northwest Territories
  5. Have legal status to work and hold a valid work permit, if currently residing in Canada
  6. Have the required certification or accreditation for the occupation and meet the licensing requirement if applicable
  7. Have the formal education and/or specialized training required for the specific position
  8. Have the work experience required by the employer
  9. Be able to sufficiently communicate in English and/or French
  10. Have sufficient settlement funds according to number of dependents


NWT Express Entry Category

Requirements:

  1. Be accepted into Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s Express Entry Pool, provide the acceptance letter issued by IRCC’s Express Entry Pool
  2. Have a profile registered in the Express Entry system, maintain valid status in IRCC’s Express Entry pool throughout the application process
  3. Have a Job Seeker Validation Code
  4. Meet the criteria of the Skilled Worker stream
  5. Submit an application in a NOC 0, A or B occupation
  6. A Job offer in a NOC Skill Level 0, A, or B occupation
  7. Have expressed interest in immigrating to the Northwest Territories
  8. Have legal status to work and hold a valid work permit, if currently residing in Canada
  9. Have the required certification or accreditation for the occupation and meet the licensing requirement if applicable
  10. Have the formal education and/or specialized training required for the specific position
  11. Have the work experience required by the employer
  12. Be able to sufficiently communicate in English and/or French
  13. Have sufficient settlement funds according to number of dependents


Business Stream

Requirements:

  1. Must commit to invest:
    • A minimum of $300,000 CAD into starting or buying a business within the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories; or
    • A minimum of $150,000 CAD into starting or buying a business outside of the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
  2. Have a personal net worth of:
    • At least $500,000 CAD if starting or buying a business within the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories; or
    • At least $250,000 CAD if starting or buying a business outside the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
  3. Demonstrate you own at least one-third (33.3 percent) of the business,unless your personal equity investment is at least $1,000,000 CDN, in which case you may own less.
  4. Achieved a level of proficiency of 4 against the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB 4) in English or the equivalent language level against the Niveaux de competence linquistique Canadiens (NCLC) in French upon application.
  5. Demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of the Northwest Territories and its economy.
  6. Demonstrate reasonable communication skills appropriate to conduct business in the Northwest Territories and to integrate into the local community.
  7. Have the necessary experience and education to successfully implement the business plan.
  8. Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to start and operate a business and support themselves sand any dependents for the duration of the applicant’s Business Performance Agreement.

You can not have an active application with any other provincial or territorial nominee program; not have an active application with any other stream of the Nominee Program in the Northwest Territories; and not be a Refugee Claimant. And you must be ready and willing to settle full-time right here in the NWT.


The application and assessment process for the NTNP

  1. Self-assessment and initial investigations;
  2. Further investigations and face-to-face interview(s); (Initial Registration and Pre-Interview Submissions on an online NTNP account)
  3. Formal application upon invitation to apply; (Formal Application Submission on an online NTNP account)
  4. Application review; 
  5. Approval and the Business Performance Agreement;
  6. Developing the business (Arrival Report and Business Performance Agreement Interim Report Submissions on an online NTNP account); and
  7. Nomination (Final Report Submission on an online NTNP account).
